An Addressable Fire Detection system is a type of fire alarm system in which each detector, call point and device has a unique address on a data loop. When a device is activated, the control panel identifies the exact location (e.g. “Detector 032 – Stair 2, Level 5”) rather than just indicating a zone.

In a conventional system, devices are grouped into zones and only the zone is shown on the panel (e.g. “Zone 3 – Third Floor”). In an addressable system, the individual device is identified. This provides more detailed information, improves search time for the source of an alarm, and allows more complex cause-and-effect programming.

Each device on an addressable loop is given a unique address. This can be set electronically via software, automatically by the system, or physically using address switches, depending on the manufacturer.
